Eastside FC Red Win GU18 Super Black Division
The first weekend of the 36th annual San Diego Surf Cup comes to a close as Eastside FC G99 Red win its division for the second consecutive year. With 374 boys teams and 434 girls squads from twenty-three different state associations, Canada and Mexico, players came from all over the country to play soccer against the Best of the Best.
Youth Soccer News: The 36th annual Surf Cup Tournament concluded as players from across the country are crowned the Best of the Best from the U15 to U19 age groups. With early youth soccer matches starting at 7:30 AM and players showing up an hour before game time, the San Diego Polo Club on Via de la Valle in Del Mar, California and the SoCal Sports Complex in Oceanside, California were alive with soccer players, coaches and families. More than 450 college coaches attended the tournament to scout and recruit promising young players.
Coach Lance Fischbach led Eastside FC G99 Red to another Surf Cup title following the club being crowned champions of the GU17 Gold Division in 2015.
“The San Diego Surf Cup soccer tournament represents the best of the best teams in the country. The competition is fierce and game wins can occur on a great play or a small mistake,” said Tim Bauman, president of Eastside FC.
“The Eastside FC G99 Red team has been playing great soccer all year and their championship trophy from 2016 Surf Cup fittingly tops off their winning season,” said Bauman. “Congratulations to Coach Lance Fischbach and all the U18 girls for their resolve and determination to earn their first place title – truly the best of the best.”
“I’d say this team showed more resolve than maybe any team I’ve coached before,” said Coach Fischbach. “We talked before the final match-up that both teams would be tired, and our team chemistry, competitive nature and belief in one another would give us a chance to win.”
The U18 side cruised through the group stage with three wins against competition from California and Nebraska. Eastside FC tallied six goals for and one against during the opening matches.
Eastside went on to defeat Palo Alto SC 1-0 in the semifinals to earn a berth in the championship match versus Arsenal FC, coached by Sean Bowers.
Eastside FC found themselves behind 1-0 in overtime, but was able to bring the score level within minutes. Although suffering a red card in the second overtime, Eastside was able to get the game-winner for its second title in the past two years.
Congratulations to Eastside FC G99 Red on another great run at San Diego Surf Cup! Best of luck on the upcoming fall season.
