Nike Competitive Coach of the Year Youngers – Seth Trembly – Surf SC
San Diego Surf SC coach Seth Trembly was very honored to receive the Nike Competitive Coach of the Year Youngers award for Girls from Cal South earlier this month. Trembly joined Surf SC three years ago and is also an assistant men’s soccer coach at University of California at San Diego (UCSD).
“Cal South has established itself as the top US Youth Soccer State Association across the country. This is a very competitive place for youth soccer and it is a special honor to receive this award from Cal South as there are so many great coaches developing strong teams in Southern California,” said Trembly. “Cal South is well known for what they have accomplished in player development.”
“To earn the recognition of Cal South Coach of the Year is an exceptional accomplishment,” said Derek Barraza, President and Chairman of Cal South who agrees that Southern California is one of, if not the most competitive area for youth soccer in America. Cal South teams have won an amazing 64 National Championships; more than many other youth state associations combined.
“Congratulations to Seth Trembly — not many young soccer coaches build such an impressive resume so quickly. We are happy to have such a quality young coach on our staff and wish him many more years of success.” said Colin Chesters, Director of Coaching for San Diego Surf SC.
“As with all individual awards and recognition in soccer, I owe so much to both my teams, the Girls U14 ECNL and Girls U13 EGSL. Both teams are such a pleasure to coach and work with. This award is a symbol of all their hard work and dedication,” said Trembly.
A native of Littleton, Colorado, Trembly grew up competing as a youth soccer player in US Youth Soccer’s Region IV. “I remember playing for Colorado in 1994 when I was playing up against Cal South teams – Cal South has always had a history of talented and special players,” said Trembly.
Turning Back Time: Trembly was part of the original 1999 class at the Bradenton Academy. A member of the U.S. Under-17 national team residency program, he trained with Cal South Alum Landon Donovan, along with other top professional soccer players including DaMarcus Beasley, Kyle Beckerman, Oguchi Onyewu and Bobby Convey. Trembly’s team placed fourth at the 1999 FIFA U-17 World Championship in New Zealand, with Trembly starting four of six games at left back. The team later earned the title of U.S. Soccer’s Team of the Decade.
After the U-17 World Cup experience nine 1999, Trembly signed a Project 40 contract with Major League Soccer (MLS), known today as Generation adidas, and was allocated to his hometown team, the Colorado Rapids. Trembly appeared in 52 matches for the Rapids through the 2004 season. From there, Trembly joined the Real Salt Lake, scoring twice in 22 games played over 2005-06. He received the RSL Humanitarian of the Year award for 2006 and finished his competitive career in 2017 with the Montreal Impact.
Today as a youth coach, Trembly trains his Surf teams to play the beautiful game with intelligence and skill. When asked what type of soccer his championship team plays, Trembly answered, “The teams play an aggressive, attacking-style of soccer that challenges the players to make the correct decisions to either make a short pass or a longer killer pass that gets the ball behind the defense and creates the opportunity to score. Soccer is about scoring goals and attacking the net but also knowing the right moments to keep possessions.”
In 2014, Trembly’s Surf SC GU13s team won the US Youth Soccer National Championship. What started with 10,000 teams from all across the country — ended with Trembly’s girls as the one national champion. “Anytime you win a national championship, it is very special as it is so hard to accomplish,” said Trembly. “And to win the U13 age bracket is a great honor. It is the oldest age bracket for a real national championship in our country since at the U14 age the ENCL and US Academy teams break off and those talented players do not compete.”
This is Trembly’s second season with his National Champions and, this year as U14s, the team won the 2104 Surf Cup Thanksgiving as well as the 2015 Vegas Player showcase that competed earlier this month.
“It is a tremendous honor and achievement to be named the Cal South Nike Competitive Coach of the Year. To be named coach of the year among all the talented coaches out there is very humbling.”
