The United States Olympic Training Center is located at high altitude where the air is thinnest, helping for players to develop stronger due to having to work harder during their exercises.
Altitude Specialist, Bruce Kirk states:
“Kenya’s highest point is Mount Kenya where the air is much thinner and their bodies have to work harder to run, lift, throw or jump. When athletes return to sea level after a stint at elevation, they’re significantly stronger and more powerful due to the increased mass of their circulating red blood cells.”
Kirk helped pioneer the concept of coaching Olympic-level gymnasts at high altitude that is now practiced throughout development and training techniques.
Dr. Federico Formenti, a physiology researcher at the University of Oxford states:
“It is the higher capacity to deliver fuel to muscles that athletes are interested in.”
