Champions Crowned at 2016 Albion Cup in San Diego
Known for developing home grown players and providing excellent college placement, the Albion Soccer Club is one of the top youth soccer clubs in America. The successful 2016 Albion Cup is over and the most successful teams were crowned champions – another year may be in the record books, but the opportunity to create lasting impressions with college coaches lingers on.
The highly competitive 2016 Albion Cup was held from July 14 through the 17th in San Diego, California. This tournament brought nearly 600 youth soccer teams to America’s 8th largest city and while the champions were crowned on the last day of the competition, each day offered fierce action as all the teams worked hard to advanced to the finals and earn the right to be called champion.
The annual Albion Cup Showcase included U8 to U19 age groups with the older teams aiming to impress collegiate coaches. College coaches from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, San Diego State University, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UCLA, UCSB, UCSD, University of New Mexico and numerous additional colleges and universities were in attendance at the 2016 Albion Cup, scouting for future prospects and determining scholarship offers.
“This year’s Albion Cup featured close to 600 teams — more than 700 youth soccer team applied and we selected the most competitive teams from across the country, ” said Noah Gins, Executive Director of Albion Soccer Club. “Approximately 100 college coaches watches the showcase, which played on UCSD’s beautiful fields. On a national level, we continue to put on one of the best showcases in the country and this year.”
How well did Albion SC perform in the tournament?
“Albion Cup continues to get tougher and tougher, and our teams were definitely represented in the finals of most age groups with 8 Albion teams crowned champion,” said Gins.
“The Albion Cup was very competitive and our Albion SC 2002 Development Academy team won and so did last year’s Development Academy 2001 team. Both teams are Albion Cup Champions,” said Albion coach Paul Holohan. “Albion SC USDA ’03 made it to the Finals as well. It was a great experience for all our players and fabulous preparation for the season.”
“Albion Cup is held over three to four days and this year, our tournament had two flights – Showcase and Cup,” said Gins. “Showcase obviously representing the crème of the crop.”

What is up next? Albion will host its Development Showcase in January that will welcome age groups U8 to U14 for its winter tournament. “Our January Albion Showcase typically brings in about 200 teams from all over the region, as well as quite a few teams from Dallas and Arizona,” said Gins. “It’s a great preparation for post-season play.”
