San Diego Surf Cup Olders & Youngeres Champions and Finalists
The 36th annual San Diego Surf Cup just came to a close as players from across the country were crowned the Best of the Best.
A total of 468 teams — 216 boys and 252 girls — were in attendance for the first weekend, often referred to as the Older’s weekend of the tournament. With approximately 500 college coaches attending & scouting promising U15-U19 players for their college program, Surf Cup is one of the most well established college recruiting opportunities. Twenty-one states were represented with 10 teams traveling from Canada and 10 teams from Mexico.
“This years Cup was great — good competition, close to 500 college Coaches on-site and very few injuries,” said Mike Connerley, President of Surf Cup Sports. There was speculation if Connerley — who built Surf Cup into the world-class youth soccer tournament it is today — was retiring this year.
“Yes, this was my last Cup as I am retiring at the end of this month,” said Connerley. “Who would have known in 1979, when I took my son Josh to play in the Leucadia Soccer Club that I would be retiring from a tournament called Surf Cup? I am extremely proud of what Bill Boyd and I created in 1988 and what Surf Cup has grown to be today.
The reason the Surf Cup is what it is today is we never did anything unless we could do it first class. I would love to know how many players over the years received College Scholarships and the money we have saved their parents. It has to be over $100,000,000,00.
“But most of all, it has been the many people that make up the Surf Cup family for the past 28 years — I leave the Cup in good hands with the Big Guy in charge. Together we have built a dedicated staff and partnership with fantastic people all working together to continue the tradition of the Best of the Best,” said Connerley.
Editor’s Note: If you feel you were scouted and/or awarded a scholarship by playing in a Surf Cup, please email me – we are working on a special Impact of Surf Cup feature.
In association with Tourbeau Sports Group, selected featured matches at Surf Cup were livestreamed with professional commentary. With these youth soccer matches accessible to all, this was a fabulous success — and one appreciated by coaches, players and soccer families around the world.
The second weekend, from Aug 4 through Aug 8 is often called the Youngers Surf Cup as teams U10-U14 come to try to become the Best of the Best. With 158 boys teams and 182 girls teams, once again San Diego is the hub of competitive soccer for America.
The Scoop on the Flights: This year the competition was incredibly tough at the San Diego Surf Cup — with multiple flights, teams faced tough competition across the board. The Order of Flights: Super Black, Super White, Black, White. The number of teams in each bracket differed and ranged from 8 teams to 16 teams for’s the Older weekend and for the Younger’s, there were a few flights with 20 teams, plus the USSDA Divisons for the Boys in which the 2002, 2003 and 2004 USSF Development Academy teams competed. Not all age groups had all flights.
