2017 NPSL Coach of the Year
Elm City’s Teddy Haley was voted the top head coach in the NPSL by teams across the country.
The National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) is proud to announce Elm City Express head coach Teddy Haley as the recipient of the 2017 NPSL Coach of the Year award.
“I am humbled and honored to win the NPSL National Coach of the Year Award,” Haley commented.
“With the NPSL being such a massive league, with many fantastic coaches, it is outstanding to be recognized. That being said, I owe this award 100% to the Elm City family,” said Haley. “The owners, management, supporters, my coaching staff, and especially the players have all been exceptional and ultra professional from the very beginning. It has been a true pleasure working with everyone at Elm City to create a club that we all can take great pride in.”
Haley led the Express to a 9-1-2 record in the regular season. A 4-0 record in the postseason has earned Elm City the right to host the NPSL National Championship powered by Mitre in New Haven, Connecticut on August 12th.
“Having the NPSL recognize Ted Haley as the 2017 Coach of the Year, as an organization, we feel is a well-deserved honor,” Elm City Express General Manager Brian Neumeyer added. “It is with his on-field leadership that the Elm City Express have been able to have such a magical inaugural season. His passion manifests itself in every session and every match that he directs. Coach Haley’s good-hearted nature allows for the special bond that is created through coach and player. The Elm City organization is fortunate to have Coach Haley lead our squad.”
Haley is a three-time Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Coach of the Year, and is entering his 13th season as head coach of the Post University men’s soccer. Haley was named NSCAA East Region Coach of the Year in 2013 when his Eagles were ranked number five nationally, qualifying for the NCAA tournament for the second year in a row. Haley boasts an overall record of 119-85-30 and his teams have qualified for the postseason every year he has been at Post.
“Coach Haley was constantly pushing our limits in terms of technical ability and tactical understanding,” Elm City Express defender Istvan Kanyo commented. “He helped us all buy in to the team and commit to each other and our goal. It was wonderful to play for him and the rest of the staff.”
Over the past six years Haley has led his team to six consecutive championship matches, winning three regular season CACC titles, along with two ECAC championships in 2014 and 2015. Since Haley joined Post University in 2005, he has mentored 38 All-CACC selections, 37 CACC All-Tournament selections, 37 All-CACC Academic selections, nine Daktronics All-East Region selections, four Daktronics All-Americans, one Daktronics East Region Player of the Year Award, two ECAC tournament MVPs, two Capital One Academic All-American awards, and two NSCAA Academic All-American awards.
Haley began his collegiate playing career at the University of Connecticut, where he was a freshman starter. After he transferred to the College of Charleston in Charleston, S.C., Haley and his C of C teammates won three consecutive TAAC conference championships and bids to three straight Division I NCAA Championships. Haley was selected to consecutive All-TAAC league and All-TAAC tournament teams and picked to the NCAA Division I All-South Region Team his senior year. Following his collegiate days, Haley played professional soccer entering the A-League, a feeder league to Major League Soccer. Over his seven-year professional career, Haley played for the Hampton Roads Mariners, the Connecticut Wolves, the Worcester Wildfire, and the New Hampshire Phantoms.
Haley is also the Post University women’s soccer assistant coach and a Director of Coaching and ECNL coach for Connecticut Football Club. He holds a USSF National “B” coaching license. He graduated from the College of Charleston in 1997, with a degree in sports science.
The NPSL Coach of the Year, voted on by the teams themselves, is awarded to the top head coach in the NPSL. Voting took place from July 28th-July 30th.
