Soccer News: Drew Whalen Earns Player of the Week Honors
Madison 56ers forward Drew Whalen has been named the ninth Mitre National Player of the Week for the 2015 National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) season.
The Peoria, IL native scored a hat trick in Madison’s 3-1 win over the Minnesota United Reserves. It was the twenty-year-old’s NPSL debut. Whalen, who is a standout at Western Illinois University, scored one goal during four appearances as a sophomore in 2014 after scoring three goals and starting 17 matches as a freshman in 2013.
Success in college was a result of Whalen’s highly decorated youth career. At Peoria Notre Dame HS, he was a part of state championship teams in 2010 and 2012, as well as finishing state runners-up in 2009 and finishing third in 2011. He would go on to earn Honorable Mention All-American honors in 2012 after registering an incredible 35 goals and 25 assists in his senior season.
