Soccer News: Argentine Manager Joins Club Tijuana for 2015 Apertura
Ruben Omar Romano will be Club Tijuana’s next head coach. The Argentine manager joins the Xoloitzcuintles for the teams’ first preseason practice heading into the 2015 Apertura tournament of the LIGA MX, Mexico’s top-flight league.
The Argentine manager has more than 35 years of experience coaching in Mexico. He began working in Mexican soccer in 1980 with Club America. He made his head-coaching debut in 1998 with Celaya, helping the team escape relegation.
Romano has been the head coach of nine First Division teams. He is known for using an attacking brand of soccer and for always looking to be competitive in every aspect of the game.
Romano has led teams to four Mexican League finals. He took Monarcas Morelia twice, in the 2002 Apertura and 2003 Clausura. He reached the final in his 2010 Bicentenario tournament, losing the final penalty kicks against Toluca while coaching Santos Laguna. Romano’s Santos reached the final in the next tournament, the 2010 Apertura against Monterrey.
The Argentine coach is coming off tournaments as the Puebla FC coach in the 2013 Apertura, 2013 Clausura and the 2014 Apertura.
Romano brings his coaching staff to Tijuana. It includes his assistant Norberto Scoponi and Gilberto Adame, a former Club Tijuana player, and Luis Canay, the team fitness coach.
