Soccer News: Crystal Dunn Voted NWSL Player of the Week
Washington Spirit forward Crystal Dunn was voted the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Week by the media for Week 8 of the 2015 NWSL season.
Dunn, 22, scored the game-winning goal for the Spirit in the first half to secure a 2-1 win at home over Portland Thorns FC on Saturday night at Maureen Hendricks Field Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, MD.
The New York native’s goal came at the 28th minute of the game, with Dunn putting tremendous pressure on Thorns’ goalkeeper Michelle Betos, and stealing the ball off Betos’ foot before finding the back of the open net. The Spirit continued to attack Portland’s backline, with Laura del Rio and Dunn leading the way. Dunn’s goal helped extend the Spirit’s undefeated streak at home.
The former Tar Heel is the third Spirit player to be honored as the NWSL Player of the Week. She is the second NWSL player to receive the award twice this season, when she was honored with the award in Week 3.
The Washington Spirit will return to action Saturday, June 6 at 7:00 p.m. ET against the Boston Breakers at Maureen Hendricks Field at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md.
The NWSL Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a selection of journalists that cover the league on a consistent basis.
