Soccer News: Local San Diego Underdogs Win Championship
Chula Vista FC was the Cinderella team of this year’s Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The team of amateur soccer players beat professionals on their way to the third round of the tournament before losing to Sacramento. But after winning the regional championships, they’re heading to the National Championships.
Chula Vista FC, of Cal South, kept their hopes for a national title in the USSF Men’s Open Cup alive as they overtook Suki’s SFC, from Oregon in a close 2-1 victory.
This year’s playoffs were hosted by CSA-North at the Davis Legacy Youth Soccer League Complex in Davis, California. The fields were in excellent condition, well maintained and of match quality and size. Clear skies, warm weather, and good competition made for an excellent tournament.
Most of the teams also complemented the referee crew on their performances, even in the final game where everything was on the line.
Chula Vista started off with a win against CLUB MARIN (5-1), then followed with two losses against SUKI’S SFC (3-2) and DOXA NORCAL (3-2). However, their win against IPS/MARATHON TAVERNA (2-4) brought them to the final to face SUKI’S SFC once again. And Chula Vista came out victorious with a 2-1 win.
Chula Vista now advances to the USASA National Men’s Open Cup Championship on July 17-19 at the Hampton Road Soccer Complex in Norfolk, VA. Visit their fundraising website to donate.
