Atlanta Silverbacks Announced Abdul Bangura Will Be Promoted To The First Team
Soccer News: The Atlanta Silverbacks promoted center back Abdul Bangura to the first team, adding depth to the backline and midfield with the versatile 29-year-old.
The Club announced the addition on Friday, making Bangura eligible for Saturday’s Fall Season Opener against the Tampa Bay Rowdies (6 p.m., ESPN3).
“Abdul is a player that adds a lot to the team as it stands,” Silverbacks coach Gary Smith said. “He’s obviously familiar with the Club and our team through his participation with the Reserves and from last season. He adds a depth and athleticism to our midfield and backline, opening up options at several different positions.”
Bangura returns to the Silverbacks after featuring in nine matches during the 2014 season and two Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup appearances. He’s featured for the Atlanta Silverbacks Reserves in the NPSL throughout 2015.
The Freetown, Sierra Leone, native moved to Atlanta as a teenager before beginning his collegiate career at Montreat, appearing in every match from 2011-13.
With the Silverbacks in 2014, Bangura featured in 673 minutes.
Bangura is the cousin of Silverbacks striker and leading goal-scorer Shaka Bangura.
