Two Goals and One Assist for Sockers Defender
Soccer News: San Diego Sockers defender Enrique Tovar was named to the Major Arena Soccer League Team of the Week for Week 10 of the season.
Tovar received honorable mention in week nine and cracked the top six this time around with a two goal, one assist performance in San Diego’s 11-5 win over Atletico Baja.

The 36-year-old scored both his goals on the power-play. The first came at the 10:17 mark of the opening period as “Qeeks” found space in the middle to toe-poke home a lay off from Nick Perera.
Tovar capped off his performance by ghosting to the back post and tapping in an inch-perfect pass from Kraig Chiles with two and a half minutes to play in the third quarter.
Tovar’s two goals was just rewards for his movement and ability to cause trouble within the middle of the box formation that Atletico was employing on the penalty kill.
The recognition is also for his stout defending. At one point in the final quarter, Tovar stood up three different players just to the right of Chris Toth’s goal. The defender poked the ball alway from two different Atletico Baja attackers at the edge of the box before recovering to force the third to play the ball backwards, not allowing any shots during that particular attacking sequence.
“It’s always an honor to be named to the Team of the Week in the MASL,” Tovar said upon hearing about his selection. “I was very thankful to have had my family from home as well family from Tijuana come to the game and support me and the team this past weekend.”
Toth (13 saves), Chiles (one goal and four assists), and Matt Clare (three goals) all received honorable mention.
The Sockers (6-4) are back in action on January 3rd against the Tacoma Stars. A win in Washington would draw San Diego level with Tacoma for second place in the Pacific Division. Kick-off is slated for 5:05pm PT.
