San Diego Sockers and Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) News:
Soccer Match Update: Tacoma 4 – Sockers 5
The San Diego Sockers held off a ferocious comeback to outlast the Tacoma Stars, 5-4 at the Valley View Casino Center.
With the win, San Diego moves into second place in the Pacific Division, level with Tacoma at 11-6 on the season.
The home side increased its longest winning streak of the season to four matches, while snapping Tacoma’s at four in the process.
San Diego took a 5-1 lead into the final 15 minutes, but Adam West and Troy Peterson scored powerplay goals and Corey Keitz smashed one home from distance with 1:41 remaining. The Sockers, however, were able to hold on for the vital victory.
For the second time in as many meetings, the Sockers kept the Stars scoreless in two quarters. Kraig Chiles scored the only goal of the first quarter on a feed from Victor Quiroz.
Even though Trevor Jensen brought Tacoma level to open the second quarter, San Diego took a 3-1 lead into halftime following strikes from Brian Farber and another from Chiles.
The night was won in the third period. Anthony Medina and Matt Clare sent Sockers fans into delirium as the home side pulled further ahead.
You can never count out Tacoma though and with the game seemingly out of reach, the Stars came roaring back into contention, but the Sockers were able to batten down the hatches just in time to see out the clock.
San Diego travels to Tacoma on the 20th before coming home for a match against the Turlock Express on the 21st. It will be Military Appreciation Night with kickoff slated for 5:05pm PT.
