Alyssa Naeher of Chicago Red Stars is Named NWSL Player of the Week
Alyssa Naeher of the Chicago Red Stars is named NWSL Player of the Week following the goalkeeper’s fourth straight shutout to lead her club past FC Kansas City over the weekend. Naeher receives the honor for the third time in her career along with seven other Chicago players who have also been named as recipients of the award.
Soccer News: Chicago Red Stars goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher was voted the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Week by the NWSL Media Association for Week 5 of the 2016 NWSL season.
Naeher, 28, posted her fourth straight shutout to help the Red Stars earn one point in a nil-nil draw Friday against FC Kansas City at Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City. It was the team’s first tie of the season.
The Bridgeport, Conn. native made several great saves including one that came in the 73rd minute off a diving header from Kansas City’s Shea Groom. Naeher came off her line and flew across the goal to block the shot with her right knee.
The U.S. international played all 90 minutes of the game and finished with five saves on 12 shots (five on goal).
It is the third time Naeher has been honored as the NWSL Player of the Week, with her previous accolades in Week 17 of the 2015 NWSL season and Week 18 of the 2014 NWSL season. It is the seventh time a member of the Red Stars has won the award.
The Chicago Red Stars will return to action on the road Sunday, May 22 at 7 p.m. ET against Seattle Reign FC at Memorial Stadium in Seattle.
The NWSL Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by the NWSL Media Association, a collection of press that cover the league on a consistent basis.
