Tobin Heath of the Portland Timbers is Named NWSL Player of the Week
Tobin Heath is named NWSL Player of the week following the Portland Thorns’ 4-1 victory over the Washington Spirit on Saturday night. Heath receives the honor for the first time in her career as Portland prepare to host Seattle Reign at Providence Park this weekend.
Soccer News: Portland Thorns FC midfielder Tobin Heath was voted the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Week by the NWSL Media Association for Week 6 of the 2016 NWSL season.
Heath, 27, registered a goal and one assist to help the Thorns earn a 4-1 victory over the Washington Spirit at Providence Park in Portland. It was the team’s second win at home this season.
The Basking Ridge, N.J. native made her first play of the game in the 26th minute when she served a corner kick towards the back post forLindsey Horan, who headed the ball into the net.
The North Carolina Tar Heel product scored the team’s third goal of the game in the 46th minute off a pass into the box from Christine Sinclair. Heath chipped the ball past Washington goalkeeper Stephanie Labbe, who got a hand to the shot, and tapped it in at the goal line.
The U.S. international played all 90 minutes of the game and finished with three shots (one on goal).
It is the first time Heath has been honored as the NWSL Player of the Week. It is the 10th time a member of Portland Thorns FC has won the award.
Portland Thorns FC will return to action Sunday, May 29 at 7 p.m. ET against Seattle Reign FC at Providence Park in Portland, Oregon.
