Soccer News: Week 9 of the 2016 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) concludes as Portland Thorns FC sit in second place with the Washington Spirit. The Thorns lead on goal differential following the club’s 2-0 victory versus Western New York Flash at Rhinos Stadium.
Chicago Red Stars remain at the top of the table following a 3-0 victory over the Boston Breakers. Sofia Huerta led Chicago with a brace as Casey Short tallied the final goal in the 62nd minute.
On Saturday, Washington welcomed Orlando Pride to Maureen Hendricks Field Maryland SoccerPlex. Estefania Banini and Francisca Ordega led the Spirit with a goal a piece to keep Washington one point behind Chicago.
Sky Blue FC and Seattle Reign FC played out a scoreless draw at Yurcak Field on Sunday to keep both teams mid-table.
The weekend concluded with Houston Dash hosting FC Kansas City at BBVA Compass Stadium. Kansas City topped Houston 1-0 with Becky Sauerbrunn scoring the lone goal of the match in the 81st minute.
FC Kansas City goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart tallied three saves on the night to keep her standing of most saves in the league at 35.
