Stanford Men’s Soccer Edges UCLA at Home
UCLA men’s soccer fell 3-0 to a strong Stanford side on Sunday afternoon to snap a three-game winning streak for the Bruins. UCLA returns home to take on the University of California for the second consecutive weeks a the No. 22 side looks to get back on track in Pac-12 action.
College Soccer News: UCLA men’s soccer’s three-game winning streak was snapped on Sunday versus Stanford University in a 3-0 loss at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium. The Bruins concluded their three-game road trip with two wins and a loss in Pac-12 action as they sit tied for second place with the University of Washington.
“Goals change games,” said UCLA head coach Jorge Salcedo. “At 1-0, we had two great chances to score and did not find the back of the net. The next two goals came from set pieces and that’s the game. 3-0 is not indicative of our performance, but it’s the reality. We have Cal in four days and have to be ready.”
The first half of play concluded deadlocked at 0-0 with the Bruins having a pair of scoring chances as Jackson Yueill took a shot from the top of the box in the 33rd minute that was blocked just wide of the net. Two minutes later, Seyi Adekoya made a strong run through the defense but his shot was saved towards the far post.
Stanford opened up the scoring in the 66th minute as Sam Werner received a pass at the top of the box and finished his strike low to the left post. The Cardinal extended their lead in the 76th minute as Tanner Beason collected a cleared ball off a corner kick and shot it to the left post past Bruins goalkeeper Kevin Silva.
Stanford brought their tally to three in the 80th minute as Adam Mosharrafa scored a free kick to the upper part of the net.
UCLA’s best scoring opportunity came in the 69th minute as Yueill took a long-range strike that connected with the crossbar. The rebound was collected by Brian Iloski and served back to Adekoya but his shot was saved by Stanford goalkeeper Andrew Epstein to keep UCLA off the board.
Stanford jumped to the No. 11 ranked position following the win, while UCLA fell to No. 22.
The Bruins (7-4-1, 3-2-0) return home this week for a three-game homestand starting on Thursday, October 20th against California from Drake Stadium scheduled to kick off at 8 p.m. PT after the women’s soccer game at 5 p.m. PT versus Washington.
