With the latest Guinness World Records book out, a few soccer players have made the list after setting world class records in 2016. Petr Cech has recorded 181 clean sheets in the Premier League, while Gareth Barry has started 580 matches. Carli Lloyd claimed titles for most goals in a FIFA Women’s World Cup and fastest goal in the final.
Soccer News: Thanks to extraordinary careers in the soccer field, Premier League stars Petr Cech and Gareth Barry along with U.S. Soccer legend Carli Lloyd have won places in the much-coveted Guinness World Records 2017, which is out now.
Throughout a glittering career at the highest level, playing for two of the country’s biggest clubs in Chelsea (04 – 15) and now Arsenal, Petr Cech (CZE) has kept 181* clean sheets in the Premier League. He achieved the record-breaking 174th clean sheet on December 28, 2015 when Arsenal beat Bournemouth 2-0, taking him clear of retired England goalkeeper David James.
Gareth Barry (UK) has made a career out of being consistent. Since making his debut at the age of 17 at Aston Villa, Barry has started 580* games, breaking the record with his 572nd start versus Sunderland on May 11, 2016. In a cruel twist of fate for David James, this record was also his. James finished his Premier League career with 571 starts. Barry recently became only the third player to reach 600 appearances in the Premier League, joining Ryan Giggs and Frank Lampard at the top of the all-time appearances list.
U.S. Women’s National Team member, Carli Lloyd claimed titles for Most goals in a FIFA Women’s World Cup final by an individual (3), the Fastest goal in a FIFA Women’s World Cup final (just 3 minutes after kick-off), and the Oldest goal-scorer in a FIFA Women’s World Cup final (at 32 years and 354 days old).
These three impressive record titles were achieved by the midfielder in the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup Final matchup against Japan, in which Carli delivered an extraordinary performance that made her worthy of the recognition as the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year.
Guinness World Records caught up with Carli at her hometown soccer field in Medford, New Jersey, ahead of her appearance in the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio, to present her with her official certificates. On her Guinness World Records achievements, Carli commented, “I remember as a kid always looking for this book and just seeing all the records that are in this book. It’s pretty cool to be included. I’m honored and thrilled to be accepting not just one but three record titles.”
