Soccer News: Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles U17 squad finished the LIGA MX 2016 Apertura regular season with a 2-1 victory against host Veracruz on Friday.
The Xoloitzcuintles youth squad concluded the season with 43 points (52 total with extra points earned in PK shootouts) and a 14-2-1 record. Coach Gilberto Mora’s team now awaits its postseason opponent for next week’s quarterfinals.
Carlos Vargas and Antonio Nava scored for the Xolos, while Alonso Bencomo tallied the goal for Veracruz. Bencormo’s goal brought the match level at 1-1 on a hot and humid day that required the match to be paused for hydration.
“We would qualify to the playoffs with a tie,” said Tiburones Rojos coach Carlos Cazarin.
The match seemed to be heading to a draw, but it was Nava who recorded the game winner for Club Tijuana from the penalty spot.
Meanwhile, the U20 team played to a 1-1 tie against Tiburones Rojos at Estadio Luis “Pirata” Fuente.
