Joe Corona & Juan Meza Join Tijuana Xolos
Club Tijuana are reloading for the 2017 Clausura season after finishing 2016 atop the regular season standings. Tijuana concluded the 2016 Apertura season with 10-3-4 record, but ultimately fell in the quarterfinals to León.
Soccer News: Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles welcome two new signings in Joe Corona and defender Juan Pablo Meza for the upcoming LIGA MX 2017 Clausura season.
Corona joined the Xolos this week after a stint with Dorados de Sinaloa in the Liga de Ascenso, Mexico’s Second Division. He hoisted the 2016 Apertura Liga de Ascenso title with Dorados in previous weeks.
Corona, 26, was born in Los Angeles but grew up in San Diego, playing at Sweetwater High School and briefly at San Diego State. He returns to Club Tijuana where he worked his way through the youth system into the first division team. He was part of the Xolos’ promotion to LIGA MX in 2011, scoring a goal and setting up another in the final against Club Irapuato. He was also part of the Xoloitzcuintles 2012 Apertura LIGA MX title.
He then signed with Veracruz and later to the Liga de Ascenso with Dorados. Corona reached many milestones with Tijuana, including the club’s first goal in Mexico’s top division. He is part of the United States Men’s National Team pool, playing in Gold Cup tournaments and Olympic Qualifiers.
Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles has also added defender Juan Pablo Meza. The Culiacan native began training with the Xoloitzcuintles earlier this week.
Meza began his career in the third division with Dorados de Sinaloa in 2009 and was part of the Xolos U20 squad in 2013. He was called to the first team at that time, playing in Copa MX games. Meza played with Correcaminos UAT in 2015 and returned to Dorados during the club’s 2016 Apertura championship run.
