Borussia Dortmund Extends Julian Weigl’s Contract
Player To Watch – young players making a difference on the field: Julian Weigl has secured his position at Signal Iduna Park as he extends his contract with Borussia Dortmund until 2021. Weigl joined BVB in 2015 and has appeared in 67 of a possible 75 matches for the Bundesliga club.
Soccer News: Borussia Dortmund have secured the long-term contract of Julian Weigl as he extends his contract by two years, tying him to the club until 2021.
“I feel very much at home in Dortmund in a sporting sense as well as in the general surroundings. It was a logical decision for me and I didn’t have to think long about extending my contract,” said Weigl, who moved to the eight-time German champions from TSV 1860 Munich in summer 2015.
Weigl has undergone rapid development and made his way into the starting line-up for 25 of his 30 Bundesliga appearances in his debut season. On Matchday 34 against 1. FC Köln in 2015, he set a Bundesliga record with 214 touches on the ball.
The 21-year-old midfielder was called up for the German national team at the beginning of the year, earning him three full international caps and a spot on Germany’s EURO 2016 squad in France.
“Despite his tender age, Julian is already a personality – and a very nice one at that,” said BVB sporting director Michael Zorc. “We are delighted that he has decided to stay at the club for the long term.”
