Club Tijuana Defeat America at Home
The Tijuana Xolos advance to the quarterfinals after a win at home versus America on Wednesday night. Tijuana’s next opponent will be Monarcas Morelia with the first and second division team matchup scheduled for next week.
Soccer News: Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles edged Club America 1-0 in a round of 16 Copa Corona MX playoff game on Wednesday at Estadio Caliente.
Coach Miguel Herrera’s side advances on to the quarterfinals of the tournament with a goal by midfielder Paul Arriola. The Chula Vista, Calif. native found the net in the 28th minute when he collected a low rolling pass from Guido Rodriguez, paused and shot it past Club America goalkeeper Agustin Marchesin.
The Xoloitzcuintles will now take on Monarcas Morelia in the quarterfinals of the tournament, pairing teams from the Mexican first and second division. The game against Monarcas will be held next week.
Club Tijuana took advantage of the midfield by pushing its attack and creating a handful of dangerous plays.
Xolotizcuintles goalkeeper Gibran Lajud’s stellar performance help seal the shutout for the hosts. Lajud made a couple of diving saves in the 27th minute, including blocking a shot by Silvio Romero prior to Arriola’s game-winner.
The defense went on to prevent any real threats late in the match. Carlos Vargas even made a stout block in the 74th minute as he slid just in time to block another shot by Romero.
Javier Guemez was ejected with a straight red card in the 80th minute for a dangerous foul on Guido Rodriguez, forcing the visiting side to finish with 10 men.
Ignacio Malcorra nearly doubled the Xoloitzcuintles lead in the 84th minute when he sent a left-footed blast from the left. But America goalkeeper Marchesin was positioned well to save the shot. Malcorra tried again in injury time of the second half but had his shot blocked by a defender.
