Manchester City’s Academy Director Mark Allen To Host Youth Soccer Coaching Workshop at 2017 Manchester City Cup
The 2017 Manchester City Cup — May 27th-29th | SoCal Sports Complex and Surf Cup Sports Park — promises to be one of the most outstanding youth soccer tournaments with expansive soccer fields blazing in Man City blue — alive with great soccer action. Youth soccer in America is constantly growing and the emphasis on developing world class players is at an all time high. As the 2017 youth soccer tournament season kicks off, the 2017 Manchester City Cup is ready to host youth soccer teams from England, Mexico and all across America. Manchester City and San Diego Surf Cup Sports host this annual youth soccer tournament, working together to create a highly professional experience for players on both sides of the Atlantic.
One of the highlights this year will be the Manchester City’s Youth Academy returning, along with defending champions Xolos Academy, to compete in the highly respected Academy Super Group bracket.
Joining these accomplished youth teams to complete the prestigious Academy Super Group will be Tottenham Hotspur FC Youth Academy from London, Club America from Mexico City, LA Galaxy, San Jose Earthquakes, Seattle Sounders, Crossfire Premier, Pateadores SC, FC Golden State and San Diego Surf.
In addition to great youth soccer competition in an extended new play format, the Manchester City Cup includes a special youth soccer coaching education program.
With the goal of giving back to the beautiful game — and with the focus on the future, Head of Manchester City’s Academy Mark Allen will hold a high-level, youth soccer coaching workshop on the player development, training techniques and the coaching philosophy used by Manchester City’s top rated youth academy.
With many Manchester City Academy teams earning championships, 2016/17 has been one of the most successful seasons to date — earning international respect. In addition, last June, Manchester City Academy also launched their Girls’ Academy, with age groups starting from the U10s going through to the development squad. The Manchester City Girls Academy currently has approximately 70 female players
The Man City Cup Youth Soccer Coaching Workshop will be held on Wednesday, May 24th at the So Cal Sports Complex in Oceanside. Lunch will be provided for all coaches attending. Mark Allen has been the Manchester City Academy Director since 2009 – and since then, the English Premier League team’s youth academy has flourished and expanded dramatically. Allen has played an important role in defining the player centered coaching philosophy at Manchester City.
Diane Scavuzzo: How will this year’s coaching workshop differ to that of last year?
Mark Allen: Last year was a symposium where we provided direct information to the coaching audience on the Manchester City Academy’s philosophy, principals and coaching methodology.
For this year at the 2017’s Manchester City Cup, we will provide a broader insight into our six phases of play, via interactive workshops.
Diane Scavuzzo: How will the youth soccer coaches benefit from attending the Workshop?
Mark Allen: The coaches will have the opportunity to partake in the workshops, share their own individual challenges that they have within their own youth soccer clubs, and understand how they can transfer their own learnings from the workshops into their own clubs.
Diane Scavuzzo: Manchester City focuses on developing the whole player – what does that really mean?
Mark Allen: At Manchester City, we hold a playing ethos and just as importantly a person ethos, as we believe good players and good people make great players.

Tasked with developing players for the first team, Allen is proud of the players accomplishments and has been determined to build from the community. Two-thirds of players in MCFC’s Football Academy are drawn from the local area – an impressive 35% of academy players come from Manchester, and the net transfer fee payments in 2014-15 were the second-lowest since 2008-09.

Allen is familiar with San Diego and youth soccer in America – Allen lived in San Diego from 1982 to 1986 and attended University on a soccer scholarship – and loved living here.
Allen believes winning is important but that in the early years of a players journey, the development of technical skills where players feel comfortable with the ball outweighs any winning outcomes.
Winning is an important part of sport and that will come as a byproduct of honing all the required skills and attributes.
As Pep Guardiola, Head Coach for the Manchester City team said, “One thing my career has taught me is that to become the best player or manager you can possibly be; you need to play against the best. This is the ultimate test for any team and coach. These are the defining moments in football when bonds are forged among the group and you grow as one team.”
