Week 1 of the 2017 UWS Season Concludes
United Women’s Soccer’s second campaign is officially underway as the second tier women’s league begins another successful year of competition. The Western New York Flash have yet to record a win following a pair of matches during opening weekend.
UWS News: The first week of the 2017 United Women’s Soccer (UWS) season comes to a close as the second-year amateur women’s league reaches new heights.
New England Mutiny (5), Rochester Lady Lancers (1)
The New England Mutiny (1-0 UWS East) and the Rochester Lady Lancers (0-2 UWS East) took the pitch at East Longmeadow High School on Sunday afternoon. New England found the net on four occasions in the first 20 minutes of the match en route to a 5-1 victory over the first-year club. Forwards Kate Howarth (two goals) and Abby Sotomayor (goal, two assists) were in solid form, while midfielder Riley Houle (goal, assist) added support behind her two teammates.
New York Surf (1), Western New York Flash (0)
The Western New York Flash (0-1-1 UWS East) could not tally a win in their second match of the weekend, as hosts New York Surf (1-0 UWS East) would record a 1-0 victory in their franchise home opener at SUNY Maritime on Sunday afternoon.
In the 14th minute, Fordham University midfielder Brooke Salmon served in a corner kick with forward Megan O’Connor sending in a one-time shot into the top left corner past Flash goalkeeper Alana Rossi for the eventual game-winning goal.
New Jersey Copa FC (6), Rochester Lady Lancers (0)
New Jersey Copa FC (1-0 UWS East) dominated possession in a 6-0 win over the Rochester Lady Lancers on Saturday night. The defending East Conference champions saw five different players tally goals and out-shot Rochester by a 25-4 margin. Midfielder Katarina Nilsson was tabbed the Jersey Mike’s Subs NJCFC Woman of the Match after she entered the game in the 54th minute and scored twice on four shots.
Long Island Rough Riders (1), Western New York Flash (1)
For the second consecutive season, the Long Island Rough Riders (0-0-1 UWS East) hosted the official kickoff match of the United Women’s Soccer season.
The Rough Riders opened the scoring in the 31st minute when Marist College forward Hope Quinonez beat WNY goalkeeper Megan Tock for the 1-0 lead. Flash defender Kaelyn Gamel would head home a corner kick from midfielder Brittany Heist to notch the vital 1-1 road draw for the visitors at Cy Donnelly Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Grand Rapids FC Women (3), Michigan Legends FC (1)
The Grand Rapids FC Women (1-0 UWS Midwest) played their inaugural match at Grandville High School on Saturday night as they defeated Michigan Legends FC (0-1 UWS Midwest) by a 3-1 scoreline. Midfielder Anna Stinson led Grand Rapids with a brace on the night.
FC Indiana (0), Detroit Sun FC (3)
Detroit Sun FC (1-0 UWS Midwest) came away with a 3-0 win over FC Indiana (0-1 UWS Midwest). A strong showing from goalkeeper Caitlyn Clem (five saves) and two goals off the bench from forward Isabella Habuda put Detroit in the driver’s seat.
Forward Emma Tokuyama registered the team’s first-ever goal with a volley past FCI keeper Tarah Hobbs (13 saves). It would take until the 56th minute for the visitors to notch the insurance goal, as Habuda would play a give-and-go with midfielder Madison Schupbach, finishing for the 2-0 lead. Forward Devyn Brough assisted on Habuda’s second of the game in the 79th minute for the 3-0 scoreline.
Indy Premier SC 0, Toledo Villa FC 3
Indy Premier SC (0-1 UWS Midwest) fell 3-0 to Toledo Villa FC (1-0 UWS Midwest) at Carroll Stadium on the campus of IUPUI . Midfielder Veronica Zaciek led the Villa offense on this night, notching two first half goals. It would take until the 82nd minute for Toledo’s final goal of the match as Bowling Green Star University forward Skylar Fleak scored from six yards out for the 3-0 scoreline.
