Brentwood Scorpions Win Their Second Consecutive Arch Cup
New York Youth Soccer News: Cheilis Rodriguez scored all three goals for Brentwood
In the words of that noted philosopher, Yogi Berra, “It was déjà vu all over again.”
Last year, the Brentwood Scorpions shut out the Oceanside Blaze, 4-0, in the Arch Cup final. When these two Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) teams met in the first round back in March, the score was much closer but Brentwood still won, 2-1.
Oceanside was hoping that the third time would be the charm when they met in the 2017 Girls-Under-15 Arch Cup Gold final on June 10 at Stringham Park in LaGrange but Brentwood won again, this time by a score of 3-1.
Cheilis Rodriguez scored all three goals for Brentwood even though she was marked by two Oceanside defenders during the match and she was substituted twice.
Brentwood coach Hector Santos said, “Both teams had good possession and our girls never give up.”
Oceanside did not leave the Hudson Valley without a prize as they received the Rocco Amoroso Sportsmanship Award as determined by the game officials.
The namesake of the award, who died last year, was inducted into the Halls of Fame of the LIJSL and Eastern New York plus was honored as a Life Member by U.S. Soccer. Amoroso started the LIJSL Sportsmanship Program in 1980, it has since been copied around the world and he spoke about the benefits of Fair Play across the United States.
