Sky Blue FC forward Sam Kerr National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Team of the Month
Kerr scored five goals in three appearances during August, leading her to the honor for the fourth consecutive month.
WOmen’s Soccer News: During the month of August, Kerr extended the Sky Blue FC franchise record for most career goals (27), as well as tying the all-time league record of 16 goals in a single season (Kim Little – 2014). Additionally, Kerr also increased her NWSL career goals record to 42 overall.
Two other firsts that Kerr added to her NWSL resume in August include her becoming the first player to register two hat tricks in one season while also being the first player to score four goals in a single match. That night came on August 19 when Sky Blue FC hosted Seattle Reign FC at Yurcak Field.
After trailing 3-0 at halftime in that contest, Kerr exploded for four goals in the second half alone to lead Sky Blue FC to an improbable 5-4 comeback win. The Australia international scored in the 48th, 68th and 71st minutes before hitting the dramatic game-winner in the 94th minute.
On the play, Taylor Lytle stepped over a corner kick and sent a lofting ball towards the mouth of the frame. As it arrived, Kerr fought off multiple defenders and put a leaping header into the back of the net for a virtual buzzer-beater.
That comeback victory made Sky Blue FC the first team in NWSL history to win a match in which it once faced a three-goal deficit. The New Jersey outfit also became the first club to win a game after trailing at the 90-minute mark.
Kerr will attempt to score an NWSL record 17th goal this season on Sunday when Sky Blue FC returns home to New Jersey, hosting the Washington Spirit for a 6:00 p.m. kickoff at Yurcak Field in Piscataway.
