Amber Michel made sure the Toreros (2-8) would remain ahead, making seven saves in the first half, including one on a penalty kick. It is the most saves Michel has made in a single half this season.
Michel’s most impressive stop came in the 29th minute when the Matadors (4-3-4) were awarded a penalty kick. CSUN’s Lindsay Kutscher stepped to the spot and sent a hard shot to the left side of the goal. Michel guessed correctly, got a hand on the ball and tipped it off the post to keep it out of the goal.
USD’s defense took over in the second half and shut down the Matador’s attack, permitting just two shots and neither on frame.
The Toreros will look to ride the momentum of the victory into next week as WCC play begins Friday at 6 p.m. (PT) at BYU.
