Youth Soccer News: Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, one of the most popular and fastest rising professional soccer clubs in the English Premier League, has made a great impact on the communities of Southern California during their time here to compete in the International Champions Cup.
Leading up to the Spurs win over Italy’s AS Roma in San Diego on July 25th, the Academy Coaching staff was busy working with Affiliates of Southern California’s premier soccer club, Surf SC.
Perhaps the most exciting stop was during the week leading up to their match, when Tottenham put on a free player clinic for players of Inland Empire Surf and San Gabriel Valley Surf (SGV Surf), two Surf Affiliate partners who serve families in the San Bernardino, Riverside.
Giving back to youth soccer communities is a passion for this storied club. Tottenham has long been a club focused on giving back to their loyal supporters and the community they reside in. White Hart Lane, the home of Tottenham Hotspur from 1899 until it’s demolition last year to make way for a new and improved grounds, is located in a particularly underserved area of North London.
While in the USA, Tottenham was hopeful they could share their world-class coaching and player development knowledge with similar communities in the Southern California area and the fit with IE and SGV Surf was a natural one.
More than 100 players from the Inland Empire and surrounding cities gathered at Inland Empire Surf’s facilities to enjoy a free clinic from Tottenham’s world-class coaching staff.
The players ran through a full hour of training, enjoyed a Q&A with the staff, and received a Tottenham Hotspur tee shirt, as well.
Andy Rogers, Tottenham Hotspur Head of Global Coaching, said, “Through our Global Football Development Programme, we take great pride in not only developing young players and coaches but making a real difference and having a lasting, positive impact on the communities we visit.”
And they did just that.
“This event was a sign of inspiration and hope for a community that faces some of the worst economic conditions nationally,” said DJ Vigil, Director at Inland Empire Surf.
“Tottenham Hotspur FC coaching staff hosted an absolute stellar session and our players were treated to a truly professional experience,” said Vigil. “Soccer is more than just lacing up your boots and playing. It’s a family, a lifestyle, a culture, and for many of our players their safe haven, and we’re happy to now have Tottenham Hotspur as part of that community.”
