New Mexico United Announce Latest Roster Signing
New Mexico United continues to fill its roster ahead of the club’s inaugural season in the USL. The club announced the signing of Chris Wehan on Thursday as he joins a roster of 14 players recently signed. Wehan recently played for the San Jose Earthquakes (MLS) and Reno 1868 FC (USL).
USL Soccer News: New Mexico United has announced the signing of midfielder Chris Wehan ahead of the club’s inaugural United Soccer League (USL) season. The expansion club will kick off the 2019 USL season at Isotopes Park on Saturday, March 9th.
“Chris is a cerebral player who can see passes and dangerous opportunities that other players can’t. His ability to create in the final third is special,” said head coach Troy Lesesne. “He is someone that truly understands what soccer means to this state and in his third professional season I believe he is primed to have his best year yet for our club.”
Wehan, midfielder, originally from Laguna Niguel, CA, played four years of soccer at the University of New Mexico (UNM). At UNM, he recorded 31 goals and eight assists during his four-year collegiate career. He was named First-Team All-Conference USA, Conference USA Tournament MVP and Consensus National Player of the Week, amongst other academic and athletic honors.
“I am extremely excited to join New Mexico United. The state of New Mexico means so much to me after spending four and a half years at UNM,” said Wehan. “I am anxious to join this group of players as I know they have been working extremely hard. I feel honored to be joining this historic group of players and staff members that are paving history in New Mexico.”
During his youth career, Wehan played with United FC for five years, claiming championship titles in the U19 Premier League, the Cal South National Cup and twice in the Far West Regional League. He was also a U18 Far West Regional Finalist. He spent one year with the Cal South Olympic Development Program (ODP) team and earned a Region IV championship title.
In 2014, Wehan played with the Seattle Sounders U23 team and played with the OC Blues Strikers in 2013.
Wehan most recently played for the San Jose Earthquakes and made multiple short-term loan appearances with Reno 1868 FC. Wehan made six appearances and two starts with the Earthquakes.
In 2017, playing for Reno 1868 FC, Wehan was named USL Assist Champion, USL First-Team All-League, and USL Rookie of the Year, with 12 assists and eight goals.
