Donovan’s Amazing Record in the MLS: 145 goals in 340 matches
America’s most famous high-scoring player has not been able to successfully retire from the game he loves, and this is very good for the sport.
Donovan came out of retirement this year to play for the San Diego Sockers — the Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) team in the famous soccer star’s new hometown and made a big impact on the sport.
Proud of how soccer has grown over the years, Donovan, the Galaxy’s all-time leading scorer was interviewed by Keith Tozer, Founder and Host of the World of Futsal on futsal and its benefits. Click here to listen to the interview.
Here are a few excerpts from Tozer’s Interview with Donovan:
“If players have the opportunity at any age to play futsal — it technically makes players better — it should be mandatory across the board,” said Landon Donovan.
“Just the ability in the game to step on the ball and rolling it with the sole of your foot is something I have never done in the outdoor game,” said Donovan. “Most youth clubs in San Diego have some futsal component. I think people are understanding the value of it to improve players.”
“The other thing about futsal and especially the indoor game — and this was a big learning curve for me — you have to be constantly tuned into the game,” said Donovan. “In indoor, the ball is constantly in play. There are no 30-second breaks.”
One of the many benefits of playing with the San Diego Sockers is Donovan’s heightened perspective on the indoor game. “There are so many talented players playing indoor soccer. Players just need a place to showcase themselves and the indoor provides that,” said Landon Donovan. “The question is, how can we give more players the chance to be seen?”
“I am extremely proud of this new interview with Landon — it was a very interesting and honest, open chat with a player who has really changed soccer in America,” said Tozer who launched the World of Futsal podcast in 2018 after being head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Futsal Team for twenty years.
