Donovan will lead in dual duties as both Executive Vice President of Soccer Operations and Manager. San Diego Loyal is the newest member of USL Championship and will begin play in March 2020 at Torero Stadium on the University of San Diego campus.
San Diego Loyal will launch its inaugural season in March 2020.
#SDLOYAL will hold its first round of open tryouts in December 2019 and training camp will launch in January 2020.
I had the pleasure of lunch with Landon a while back when he began his efforts to bring a professional team to San Diego. What impressed me the most was his desire to improve soccer. Landon’s vision was to build a club with integrity, a soccer team that would make a difference. Our chat was interrupted briefly when a fan approached our table in the corner of a restaurant. I can’t remember if the fan wanted a picture or an autograph, what I do remember was how kind and considerate Landon was, and how responsive he was. As an ambassador of the beautiful game and an iconic star of American soccer, Landon is unrivaled. Now, we look forward to seeing him as the head coach of San Diego’s USL Championship team.
“There are no names more synonymous with men’s soccer in the U.S. than Landon Donovan.”
Andrew Vassiliadis, San Diego Loyal Chairman

We are honored to have him lead our technical side, both on and off the pitch.”
