“This week has been a profound one for our country. From coast to coast, people have joined protests in response to the deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor,” says Colin Schmidt, Chief Executive Officer of America SCORES Bay Area. “These protests are fueled not only by outrage at these individual tragedies but an intense need to address long-standing pain and anger about systemic racism and injustice.
The confluence of the Floyd’s, Abery’s, and Taylor’s deaths and the COVID 19 pandemic with the resulting economic upheaval have only heightened America’s pain.
“The America SCORES Coaches Summit was born out of the COVID 19 pandemic and the need to help coaches during a period of isolation. With the events of recent days, we now face further waves of hardship and dislocation amid unparalleled social unrest,” says Schmidt.
“Our question for the summit: What is the role and responsibility of a coach during this time of unrest?”
Colin Schmidt, Chief Executive Officer of America SCORES Bay Area
“What can we learn from some of this country’s best coaches on how they respond to current events with their players, teams, and institutions? How do we create both physically and emotionally safe spaces for players to develop and grow? We can not underestimate the role of the coach in helping their players navigate hardship whether it be social isolation or social injustice,” said Schmidt.
“Excellent coaches don’t simply help develop players — they help shape people.”
Colin Schmidt, Chief Executive Officer of America SCORES Bay Area
“The best coaches create a culture of trust, inclusion, and authentic communications,” said Schmidt.
Launched in April, the Soccer Coaches Summit series attracted approximately 10,000 participants from 110 countries. The series provided 150 speakers in more than 125 sessions — all for free.
The collective brainchild of board chair Jon Denholtz, Schmidt, and the America Scores Bay Area team, the Soccer Coaches Summit is back for a new two-day session in June.
The series of zoom sessions start on Wednesday, June 3 at 9 AM PST and feature phenomenal presentations and discussions from an all-star roster of master coaches.
Coaching legend Bruce Arena headlines June’s America SCORES Soccer Coaches Summit.
The theme of the June Summit is a holistic approach to player development focusing on the men’s game and school-based soccer programs. The holistic method centers on enabling the player to fulfill their potential, not only as a player on the field but also as an individual off the pitch.
More than timely, this new session of the Coaches Summit will provide everyone in soccer the ability to connect and discuss the racial tension and protests that have exploded in cities all across America since George Floyd’s death.
“Soccer done right can be a vehicle to help move this country forward, to create bridges and pathways in a reality that is full of walls and divisions.”
Colin Schmidt, Chief Executive Officer of America SCORES Bay Area
“At the highest levels in the country, these coaches are talking the same language as America SCORES. They connect soccer to education and holistic development; they embrace a ‘person first’ methodology into their culture and training sessions,” said Schmidt.
Centered on the unique and important role that high school and college can play in advancing American soccer, Sasho Cirvowski from the University of Maryland will make the case for why college soccer can be the best U23 player development platform in the world.
Storied coaches Mike Noonan from Clemson, Mike Potempo from Monteverde Academy, and Rick Jacobs from St. Benedict’s Prep School will talk about the importance of culture and how they develop world-class players in the context of their educational institutions. Oguchi “Gooch” Onyewu will talk about his journey from college to international fame.
