Bayern Munich & PSG to Participate in Inaugural USA Women’s Cup
Racing Louisville FC has named the four teams scheduled to play in its fall tournament later this year. The NWSL expansion club will welcome two powerhouse European clubs for the inaugural edition of its event. The tournament is backed by soccer and entertainment professionals with long-term vision to make Louisville an annual base for the event.
WOMEN’S SOCCER NEWS: The Women’s Cup, an inaugural event to be played at Lynn Family Stadium in Louisville, Kentucky, has announced FC Bayern Munich will participate is the competition scheduled for this fall.
The German club will join National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) members Racing Louisville FC, Chicago Red Stars as well as Paris-Saint Germain of France. The four-game tournament will take place on August 18 and 21.
“We are very excited to bring two of the world’s best clubs to town for The Women’s Cup,” said The Women’s Cup director J.P. Reynal. “PSG and Bayern will give local favorites Racing Louisville and the Chicago Red Stars a chance to compete on an international stage.”
The competition structure ensures both domestic clubs will match up against an international opponent.
”FC Bayern is the world’s biggest sports family with an incredible following in North America. It is important to connect with our fans on their home soil whenever possible,” said FC Bayern Munich President of the Americas, Rudolf Vidal. “We look forward to bringing our women’s team stars to Louisville and participating in the very-first Women’s Cup.”
“Women’s football is very popular in the United States and is marketed very professionally,” said FC Bayern Women sporting director Bianca Rech. “We’re pleased that FC Bayern have the opportunity to present themselves in this market, as long as the pandemic allows, in the summer. The games in Louisville will also be a valuable experience for us as part of our pre-season preparations.”
The Women’s Cup’s will consist of two doubleheader sessions. On Wednesday, August 18, Racing will take on Chicago while FC Bayern face PSG. On Saturday the 21st, the winners will play for The Women’s Cup trophy and a third-place match will be held.
FC Bayern currently sits atop Germany’s Bundesliga table and is in pursuit of its first league title since the 2015-2016 season. The club recently advanced to the UEFA Women’s Champions League semifinals versus Chelsea FC.
PSG is currently leading Division 1 Féminine, France’s top flight, and is in search of its first league crown. The club is scheduled to play a Champions League quarterfinal on Sunday, April 18, against Lyon.
