Manchester City Crowned Premier League Champions
Over the past 10 years, Manchester City has made its presence known in English and European soccer. With five Premier League titles in the last decade, Man. City now has its sight on the UEFA Champions League trophy. The victory also marks Pep Guardiola’s 10th silverware for the club since he was named manager five years ago.
SOCCER NEWS: On Tuesday, May 11, Manchester City was crowned Premier League champions for the fifth time in 10 years. The celebration comes a week following the club’s advancement to the UEFA Champions League Final after a 4-1 aggregate victory over Paris Saint-Germain.
During the 2020-21 campaign, Manchester City broke the domestic record for consecutive wins across all competitions (21). The club is also on an English top-flight record streak of 19 consecutive away wins.
Additionally, the Premier League win comes 10 years after Manchester City lifted the 2011 FA Cup; the club’s first trophy in modern history. It is also the club’s 16th domestic honor in 11 seasons.
“I am so proud and so happy with what we have achieved,” said Fernandinho, Manchester City captain. “The Premier League is the hardest league in world football – every single game is tough. To win it again means the world to me and the rest of the squad. To captain this team is an honor and a privilege because the players have given their all throughout the season, whether in training or in matches. Winning the Premier League title is the ultimate fulfillment of our ambitions. It’s what we all dreamed of as young players, so to do it is a wonderful feeling.”
The title win also marks Pep Guardiola’s 10th piece of silverware since being named Manchester City manager in 2016.
“This has been a season and a Premier League title like no other,” said Guardiola. “This was the hardest one. We will always remember this season for the way that we won. I am so proud to be the manager here and of this group of players. They are so special. To come through this season with all the restrictions and difficulties we’ve faced,” said Guardiola. “And to show the consistency we have is remarkable. It is relentless. At the start of every season, the Premier League is the most important title for us. This is the one where you have to be there every three days, playing all your rivals home and away. Only by being the very best, week in week out, can you win this competition. It is a huge success.”
Manchester City will play Chelsea FC in the UEFA Champions League Final on Saturday, May 29th. The match will be held at Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey.
“We have missed the fans so much,” said Fernandinho. “We wanted to do this for them. We will enjoy this moment and we hope the fans do too. Rest assured we will continue to do everything we can to bring the Champions League home this season.”
