Interview with Paul Wright on how to make a difference on the field and what it takes to be an impact player:
Diane Scavuzzo: What are three tips on being in impact player? What do youth soccer players really make a difference in the game?
Paul Wright: It is incredibly important to be composed on the ball at all times.
You can’t be conservative. In other words, take chances, and don’t be afraid to fail.
You have to attack and not wait for the game to come to you. Take chances, and don’t be afraid to fail. These are the three most valuable tips I can share with a player who really wants to make an impact on the soccer field.
Diane Scavuzzo: What is a striker’s job?
Paul Wright: In soccer, a strikers job is to create opportunities for his or her teammates and to score goals. It sounds simple but it is not and it is not easy.
Diane Scavuzzo: How do you help elite youth soccer players improve their game? For example, at this Speed To Burn training for elite soccer players, what are you do with the players?
Paul Wright: Speed to Burn has special elite soccer sessions for really good players who want to improve their soccer skills and technique.
We are working on finishing in the final third, which to me, is the most important part of the game. This is training to help the soccer players put the ball in the back of the net — when it matters most. The training focuses on building up in the final third; the final passes to the finishing crosses and balls played behind the defense.
Diane Scavuzzo: Do you miss playing soccer professionally?
Paul Wright: Not at all. Once you’ve given everything you have, you have to move on. I’m happy doing what I do now by passing on my knowledge.
