Columbus Crew’s Homegrown Talent Shines on the Biggest Stage
At just 19 years and 27 days old, Aidan Morris made history by becoming the youngest player ever to start in an MLS Cup final, stepping into the Columbus Crew‘s lineup in place of Darlington Nagbe, who was sidelined due to COVID-19.
A former Columbus Crew Academy standout and Indiana University star, Morris delivered a memorable performance, proving he’s more than ready for the professional stage. His composure, vision, and fearless play helped guide the Crew to a dominant 3-0 victory over the Seattle Sounders, cementing his place as one of the most exciting young midfielders in Major League Soccer (MLS).

From Academy Prospect to MLS Cup Starter: Morris’ Rapid Rise
Just 11 months before his record-breaking MLS Cup start, Columbus Crew signed Morris to a Homegrown contract on January 14, 2020. At the time, he was coming off a stellar freshman season at Indiana University, where he earned:
- Big Ten Freshman of the Year
- Third-Team All-American Honors
But before his success in college, Morris was already making waves in youth soccer. The Fort Lauderdale, Florida native developed in the Crew SC Academy from 2017-2019, competing at the U16/17 and U18/19 levels.
Now, he has earned an MLS Cup title in his rookie season and made history alongside U.S. Soccer legend Landon Donovan, who was the first teenager to start in an MLS Cup final back in 2001.

Aidan Morris Steps Up in MLS Cup Final

“I was prepared from the beginning of the season,” Morris said. “The staff and the players drilled that message into my head—always be ready. That’s the motto I lived by this year.”
Morris also became the youngest player to be involved in a goal in MLS Cup history, recording an assist on the first Columbus Crew goal, scored by Lucas Zelarayán.
Columbus Crew Head Coach Caleb Porter on Morris’ Breakout Performance

Aidan Morris is a winner, he’s a fighter—I knew it. I’ve seen him in training. When I knew Darlington was out, he was the guy who was going in.”
Porter’s faith in Homegrown talent paid off, as Morris delivered a performance that showcased his potential as a future star in MLS.
