Boston Breakers Come Back to Earn at Point
Another NWSL women’s soccer match ends in a draw — a sign of a well balanced league – FC KANSAS CITY also tied with SKY BLUE FC this weekend. When games end in a draw after a fierce match on the field it is great for soccer fans, players and coaches alike. A real challenge materializes when leagues offer great competition. Thank you NWSL.
NWSL Soccer Update – Boston Breakers were able to salvage a point in a 1-1 draw versus first-place Washington Spirit on Friday night. Katie Stengel put the Spirit on the board in the 13th minute, but Boston’s Louise Schillgard was able to bring the match level from the penalty spot after Cali Farquharson was taken down in the box.
Women’s Soccer News: The Boston Breakers made it two in a row at home without a loss, coming back to earn a 1-1 draw against the first-place Washington Spirit in front of a season-high 4,007 fans at Jordan Field in Allston, Mass.
“I was pleased. Washington are a good side. They’ve got lots of players that can cause you problems. I was disappointed with the goal, but we responded fantastically after that,” Boston Breakers head coach Matt Beard said. “I thought it was an entertaining game end to end, but from my perspective, it’s a good point.”
The Spirit took the lead in the 13th minute. Joanna Lohman put a shot on goal inside the box, but Breakers keeper Libby Stout denied her. However, Katie Stengel was there at the far post to knock in the deflection off Stout to give Washington a 1-0 lead.
Less than two minutes later, the Breakers leveled the match. A penalty was awarded to Boston when Brooke Elby was taken down in the box by Cali Farquharson. Louise Schillgard stepped up to the penalty spot and buried it past Washington keeper Kelsey Wys. It was Schillgard’s first NWSL goal.
The Breakers threatened twice before Schillgard’s goal. In the second minute, Schillgard had a corner cleared out by Tori Huster. In the fifth minute, Elby crossed into the box, but Ali Krieger was there to clear from danger.
In the second half, both teams tried to find the go-ahead goal. In the 53rd minute, Schillgard took a free kick and curled it on goal, but it was saved by Wys. Four minutes late, Stout made a great stop on a free kick by Christine Nairn. In the 76th minute, Julie King made a spectacular save inside the six, diving to stop a shot by Lohman.
The Breakers head to Chicago Saturday to take on the Red Stars at 9 p.m. ET and stay on the road for three more matches before returning home on Sunday, July 20, (5 p.m. ET) to face Sky Blue FC.
