San Antonio Scorpions defender Nana Attakora has been asked to represent his country in Canada’s upcoming CONCACAF Preliminary Round of qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
“Any time you get called up to your national team it’s a privilege and a blessing, so we’re excited for Nana,” said Head Coach Alen Marcina. “We know he’s going to show well for Canada.”
Attakora has been capped by Canada eight times with four starts and 423 total minutes played. He also represented Canada over 30 times at various youth national team levels and scored two goals.
“It’s always exciting to be called up for national team duty and I give thanks to my teammates and coaching staff here for helping me get myself fit and playing regularly,” said Attakora. “The qualifiers we’re looking forward to, this is a big summer for us, and we’re just hoping to get two good results.”
Canada will play a home-and-away series against the Caribbean island nation of Dominica starting on Thursday, June 11, at Warner Park in Roseau, Dominica, with the second leg at BMO Field in Toronto on Tuesday, June 16. The winner of the series will advance to the draw in July for the third and fourth rounds of qualifying that will take place next fall.
