“Changing the Game” Meetings At Stony Brook University
The Stony Brook Soccer Club, a proud member of both the Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) and Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA), is pleased to host meetings about improving youth sports by creating a player-first environment. The meetings will be held this Thursday night, March 5 at Stony Brook University’s Wang Center at 100 Nicolls Road in Stony Brook.
The 6:00 pm meeting is for coaches and the discussion will be Beyond X’s and O’s: Developing a Positive Coaching Legacy. At 7:30 pm, there is a program for parents on Changing the Game: Developing High-Performers in a “Player-First” Environment.
The keynote speaker is John O’Sullivan, author of the national best-selling book Changing the Game: The Parents’ Guide to Raising Happy, High-Performing Athletes and Giving Youth Sports Back to Our Kids. John is a contributing writer for the Huffington Post, Soccer America and NSCAA Soccer Journal who left his position with MLS’ Portland Timbers in 2013 to concentrate full-time on improving youth sports.
John started the Changing the Game Project in 2012 after two decades as a soccer player and coach on the youth, high school, college and professional level. He brings to the table a wealth of practical, hands on knowledge garnered through years of working with players and their families on sport specific development, fitness and nutrition, college recruiting, and most importantly, nurturing positive, healthy, and supportive relationships between parents and their young athletes. He has complied much of this information in his #1 bestselling book Changing the Game: The Parents Guide to Raising Happy, High Performing Athletes, and Giving Youth Sports Back to our Kids.
John will be discussing the ways we can help young athletes perform to their potential while at the same time giving children ownership and enjoyment of their experience in youth sports. Stay after the meetings for a panel discussion about ongoing issues in youth sports featuring John, coaches from Stony Brook University and Dr. James Paci from the Stony Brook Orthopaedics Division of Sports Medicine.
The other hosts of Changing the Game besides the Stony Brook Soccer Club are Three Village Lax, Three Village Football, Three Village Basketball plus the Three Village Baseball and Softball League. Admission is free. For more information, e-mail andrewhsloat@gmail.com or phone 516-850-3175.
