Success for Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles
Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles played to 2-0 win against Second Division side Murcielagos FC in its opening match of the 2016 Clausura Copa MX.
Second half goals by Luis Chavez (49th minute) and Alonso Escoboza (83rd minute) Tuesday night at Estadio Centernario Los Mochis helped the visitors to three points in the Group 2 standings.
Atlas FC and Coras FC will make Copa MX debut tomorrow Wednesday Jan. 20.
Coach Miguel Herrera’s squad took a 1-0 lead early in the second half when Chavez converted a penalty kick. He was fouled inside of the penalty box after trying to dribble in after a corner kick rebound. Center referee pointed to the penalty spot after Edson Morua tripped Chavez
Escoboza, who came in for Chavez as a second half susbtitute, sealed the win for the visiting Club Tijuana. Escoboza received a through ball up the middle of the field, he dribbled into the penalty box and went around the charging Murcielagos goalkeeper Javier Romo and shot the ball into the empty goal.
Club Tijuana came out looking to attack and take the win. Young striker Amando Moreno nearly opened the scoring in the eighth minute of the match. He chased down a long pass, dribbled into the box and rounded the goalkeeper but could never find angle to shoot on goal.
Midfielders ‘Juninho’ and Gonzalo Diaz made their first appearance in a Xoloitzcuintles starting lineup after making their debuts off the bench in the Week 2 LIGA MX 1-0 win over Dorados Sinaloa.
Next up for Club Tijuana in the Copa MX will be the return match against Murcielagos FC in Estadio Caliente Jan. 26 (7 p.m. Pacific). Before that, Club Tijuana will hosts Santos Laguna Friday Jan. 22 (7:30 p.m Pacific). in Week 3 of LIGA MX.
