COLLEGE NEWS: UCLA Women’s Soccer Host UNC in Friday Matchup
UCLA Women’s Soccer is gearing up for its fourth Top 15 matchup versus the University of North Carolina on Friday at 7pm. North Carolina won the last matchup between the two schools 4-2 at Chapel Hill as the Bruins prepare to host a Tarheel side that is in form heading into the 2016 college season.
College Soccer News: No. 9 UCLA (3-1) are set to host No. 8 North Carolina (4-0-1) at Marshall Field at Drake Stadium on Friday, Sept. 9 at 7pm. The match will mark the Bruins’ fourth consecutive matchup against a Top 15 team. UCLA defeated No. 11 Texas A&M 1-0 on the road and No. 13 Penn State at home in a 1-0 in overtime win. The Bruins’ single loss of the season was versus No. 6 Florida Gators, 4-3 in overtime.
North Carolina leads the matchup between the two sides 10-1-1 with the Tarheels winning the last matchup in Chapel Hill, 4-2.
Senior Amber Munerlyn from Corona, California, played for the Tar Heels in 2013 and 2014 before transferring to UCLA in 2015. Munerlyn has played in the last four matchups between the two sides with only one in a UCLA uniform. She played 18 minutes in the 2015 match last season at UNC.
North Carolina enters the week with a 4-0-1 record following a 0-0 draw versus Duke on Friday and a 2-0 win against Villanova on Sunday.
Zoe Redei leads UNC in scoring with three goals, while goalkeeper Lindsey Harris has recorded three solo and one shared shutout in the first five matches of the season.
The Bruins are coming off a 1-0 overtime win versus Penn State led be freshman midfielder Jessie Fleming who scored the game-winning goal in the 99th minute.
Fleming headed home a corner kick from MacKenzie Cerda for the golden goal. Freshman goalkeeper Teagan Micah recorded her third shutout of the season, making a career-high-tying six saves.
