Villarreal CF and Tigres UANL to Meet in Gordon Jago Super Group Final

The international showdown will feature La Liga’s Villarreal CF and Liga MX side Tigres.
The championship match will be played on Sunday at 3:00 pm at Toyota Stadium in Frisco. The game will be broadcast live on Univision Deportes Network, the No. 1 Spanish-language cable sports channel in the nation.

The first Super Group semi-final game on Friday was a nationally televised match between crosstown rivals CF Monterrey and Tigres at 4 pm.
Tigres opened up the scoring in the 6th minute when Patrick
Rayados’ Jose Alvarado answered with a goal of his own, curling the ball just inside the right post to level the game at 1-1. Tigres got back in front in the 60th minute with a Stephen Rivas goal, making the score 2-1. Inside the last ten minutes of the game, CF Monterrey’s Luis Sanchez scored the critical equalizer making the score 2-2.
Extra time was needed to settle the score for the Dallas Cup edition of the Clásico Regio. In the 107th minute, Tigres’ Enrique Prieto connected on the winning goal with a dipping shot from outside the box, sending Tigres back to the Gordon Jago Super Group final with a 3-2 win.
The 7 pm semi-final match was a matchup between La Liga’s Villarreal CF and MLS side New York City FC.
Midfielder Justin Haak got NYCFC off to a quick start, heading the first goal of the match in the 3rd minute. The Spanish side would answer back with a string of three first-half goals. Diego Raya bagged a pair of goals in the 25th and 45th minute.
Alejandro Baena headed home a goal on the stroke of halftime, giving The Yellow Submarine a 3-1 lead at the break. New York City FC’s Dante Polvara pulled a goal back in the 80th minute, but it was a bit too late as Villarreal CF secured a spot in the final with a 3-2 win.
Defending champion Tigres is looking to become just the fifth team to win back-to-back Super Group titles and the first since Brazil’s Clube Atletico Paranaense in 2003-2004. Tigres is the club with the most Super Group titles all-time (3: 2003, 2011, 2018) and they hope to add to that number on Sunday.
Villarreal CF just recently clinched the Group VII title of La Liga’s Division de Honor, a feat they have achieved four out of the past five years. They look to become the first Spanish Super Group champion since Real Madrid in 1994.
