Landon Donovan, the greatest American soccer player in history, confirmed his participation during the halftime celebrity soccer game two weeks ago. Donovan serves as an ambassador for bringing MLS to San Diego.
The San Diego resident looks forward to participating in the celebrity match as the night welcomes local stars and former Sockers legends for the kickoff of the club’s 2017 MASL playoff run.
“I grew up knowing the name Sockers, I knew the Sockers better than I knew the LA Galaxy or DC United,” said Donovan. “It’s obvious something special has been here for a long time and I’ve always wanted to experience it. Having the ability to play in the game is really a dream come true and it’s going to be a lot of fun.”
The Sockers, San Diego’s 14-time Championship team, are at the forefront of the movement to bring MLS to San Diego. The soccer franchise sees the movement as an opportunity to carry the torch of professional soccer in San Diego. Donovan and the Sockers will be working together to identify opportunities to collect the required signatures for a privately financed “SoccerCity/SDSU/Riverpark” compound at the current Qualcomm Stadium location.
“Support local, be yourself and look for opportunities to bring others into the community,” said Donovan. “These things will hopefully help us get the signatures needed for a stadium in San Diego.”
Sean Bowers, General Manager of the San Diego Sockers, supports the MLS bid along with his colleagues.
“It’s great for the sport and the entire soccer community in San Diego,” said Bowers. “We totally support the bid and look forward to working with FS Investors, Landon Donovan and everyone else involved in making San Diego the premier location for the next MLS expansion team.”
