Borussia Dortmund Join Manchester Clubs in Champions Cup China this Summer
BVB will travel to China this summer as they join English clubs Manchester United and Manchester City in the second Champions Cup China. Dortmund sit in second place in the Bundesliga as they look to resurge themselves back to European dominance with the likes of Marco Reus, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang leading the way.
Soccer News: The eight times German Champions and former Champions League winner Borussia Dortmund will take part in the second edition of the Champions Cup China during the preparation phase for season 2016/2017 and they will face the two top English clubs Manchester United and Manchester City as part of this high profile international tournament.
Hans-Joachim Watzke, Borussia Dortmunds CEO said: “We are very much looking forward to taking part in a tournament in July with teams of such high quality. These will be great games for all the pros and the spectators.”
A BVB delegation with Champions League winner Karl-Heinz Riedle is presently in Peking for the presentation of all participants today. Carsten Cramer, Borussia Dortmund’s Director for Sales and Marketing stated: “The fact that we have been invited to take part in such a special tournament as a non-Premier League club shows the value of BVB that they have gained through their excellent performances in the past year.”
BVB will open the Champions Cup China on the 22 July in the 15 million inhabitants metropolis Shanghai with a match between two traditional clubs against Manchester United. Three days later we will see the first Manchester derby outside of the United Kingdom. Borussia Dortmund will then bring the tournament to a close probably on the 28 July(the date has not been definitely confirmed yet) in Shenzhen – one of the fastest growing cities in the world – against Manchester City with their new Head Coach Pep Guardiola.
Hans-Joachim Watzke said: “We have been welcoming big fan groups and media representatives from China to the Dortmund Signal Iduna Park on a regular basis for several years now. It is an honour to now visit them on their own home soil. We are also looking forward to getting a better impression about what wishes our fans in China have and to experience the extreme growth in the interest for football amongst the Chinese population, not just during the duels with two other great European football clubs, but also in person during our stay.”
Before BVB travels to China for these friendly matches, they will complete several training sessions in Dortmund and will also go to a training camp in the Kitzbuheler Alps. Several preparation days have already been fixed yet again in Bad Ragaz (Switzerland) for the beginning of August.
