Soccer Goes Social – Facebook, FOX and MLS
If there is on thing for sure that the 2014 FIFA World Cup proved — it was that soccer fans love their social media and connecting with each other during a soccer match and sharing the experience digitally bonded. What is better than sharing an ultimately gut-wrenching moment in soccer with fans who share the same depth of passion — but might be around the world or on the other side of the stadium? Especially now as so many former pro soccer players are on their favorite social media apps sharing their point of view on the action.
What is new in the world of social media? Facebook has teamed up with Fox Sports to map out Facebook fans of Major League Soccer teams across North America. Each state and territory is color-coded based on which Official Team Page has the most Facebook Likes from people who live in those areas.
At first glance you might notice the LA Galaxy logo stretches far and wide. The LA team has a Facebook fan base spanning 15 US states across the southwest, southeast and near the Great Lakes. Drilling down to the county level in two states, California and Texas, Facebook fans are divided among various local teams.
The question is — do you LIKE your local MLS team? Do you LIKE all MLS teams? As the new season kicks off, it is time to show your support of the world’s favorite game by supporting American soccer and perhaps thinking about catching the digital wave of being a soccer fan in this decade.
