Fanendo Adi of the Portland Timbers is named MLS Player of the Month for April tallying three goals and one assist over five games. Adi has recorded 32 goals and eight assists since joining the Timbers in 2014 and is currently tied for the Audi Golden Boot with a total of seven goals in the 2016 MLS season.
Soccer News: Portland Timbers forward Fanendo Adi was voted Etihad Airways MLS Player of the Month by fans on MLS Soccer’s website for the month of April of the 2016 season, it was announced today.
Adi, 25, is currently tied atop the Audi Golden Boot standings with seven goals on the season. In April, Adi tallied three goals and one assist over five games played, including his 11th career brace in a 3-1 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes at Providence Park on April 16. After doubling Portland’s lead in the 65th minute, Adi added a second goal and capped the victory with the second-latest stoppage-time goal in MLS history.
A week earlier, Adi scored the team’s lone goal in a 1-1 road draw with the LA Galaxy, producing a well-placed finish into the bottom right corner after running on to midfielder Diego Valeri’s pass during a quick counter-attacking play, orchestrated by the Timbers in the 52nd minute of play.
Adi helped the club to a 1-1 draw on the road against the New England Revolution on April 27. With the club tied well into the second half, Adi pressured the Revolution defense by pushing the ball up the field and made a key pass that led to Timbers midfielder Jack Barmby’s first MLS goal in the 64th minute.
Joining the Timbers during the 2014 season, Adi has tallied 32 goals and eight assists over 66 regular-season games played for his MLS career. Since his debut with the club on May 17, 2014, Adi has compiled the most multi-goal games in MLS (11) and is tied for third in goals scored in the league over that span.
Voting for MLS Player of the Month is open to the public. The final five nominees are chosen by MLS Soccer’s website editorial staff.
Next up, the Timbers will face Cascadia-rival Vancouver Whitecaps FC at BC Place on Saturday, May 7; kickoff is set for 2 p.m. (Pacific).
