FC Dallas Hoist Gordon Jago Super Group Title
Dr Pepper Dallas Cup, the oldest and most prestigious international youth soccer tournament, came to a close on Sunday as FC Dallas hoisted the Gordon Jago Super Group title after edging CF Monterrey Rayados. FC Dallas is the first MLS side to be crowned Gordon Jago Super Group Champions during the Sunday matchup in front of a record breaking attendance of 8,747.
Youth Soccer News: FC Dallas defeated CF Monterrey Rayados to claim the Dr Pepper Dallas Cup XXXVIII Gordon Jago Super Group title in a 2-1 victory in Frisco, Texas.
The contest was the final match of Dr Pepper Dallas Cup’s “Championship Weekend”, in which eight teams, representing four countries, were awarded Dallas Cup’s iconic “Boot and Ball” championship trophy.
In an exciting matchup between top academies in the United States and Mexico, 2016 U.S. Soccer Development Academy national champion, FC Dallas, and current leader in Liga MX U20, CF Monterrey Rayados, faced off for the Gordon Jago Super Group title.
The first goal of the game came in the 23rd minute when Jesus Ferreira dribbled around the edge of the box and found an open Paxton Pomykal near the penalty arc. Pomykal struck a low driven shot to the far post to give FC Dallas the 1-0 advantage.
Five total yellow cards were awarded in the first half with few opportunities created due to the physical play. FC Dallas went into the half with a 1-0 lead.
From the start of the second half, FC Dallas substitute Arturo Rodriguez and Jesus Ferreira threatened the back line of the CF Monterrey defense.
In the 82nd minute, a Monterrey free-kick struck the post to create havoc in the box. In an FC Dallas clearance attempt, the ball deflected off Monterrey’s captain Erick Amaro and into the net to make the game 1-1.
In the 89th minute, Rodriguez made a twisting run through the heart of the Monterrey defense and set himself for a right-footed shot from over 30 yards out. His strike tucked inside the right post to give FC Dallas the game-winning goal. The MLS side claimed the 2-1 victory.
FC Dallas is the first MLS club to win the Gordon Jago Super Group title and the first U.S. team since the Dallas Texans won in 2006.
