2016 FIFA Futsal World Cup Recap and Preview
Quarterfinal matchups are set for the 2016 FIFA Futsal World Cup with kick off scheduled in the three host cities of Colombia over the weekend. Russia take on Spain on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. ET, while Azerbaijan face Portugal at 7:00 p.m. ET at Coliseo el Pueblo in Cali on Sunday.

Round of 16 Recap
Russia cruised past Vietnam in the first Round of 16 matchup on Tuesday in a 7-0 victory in Medellín. Sergei Abramovich’s brace added to the other five goal scorers filling the scoresheet for Russia.

Colombia and Paraguay played out a scoreless match that saw the host country bow out of the tournament in penalty kicks. Paraguay dominated possession 63% to 37% along with tallying 36 attempts on goal versus Colombia’s 21.

Iran upset the defending champions Brazil in a deadlock match that saw the South American side exit the tournament in penalty kicks on Wednesday. Regulation ended 4-4, with Iran topping the two-time reigning champions 3-2 in penalties. Captain Falcão led Brazil with a hat-trick, but four goal scorers by Iran was able to push the match to the limit.

Spain edged Kazakhstan 5-2 in Medellín as they prepare to take on Russia in the quarterfinals. The European side dominated possession 59% to 41% and recorded 56 attempts on goal versus Kazakhstan’s 48.

Portugal cruised past Costa Rica with a 4-0 victory in Cali. Captain Ricardinho recorded a brace on the night to lead his side into the quarterfinals versus Azerbaijan.

Thursday featured three matches that needed extra time to separate break the deadlocks. Argentina edged Ukraine in the final two minutes of the second period of extra time to break the scoreless draw. Leandro Cuzzolino converted from the penalty spot in the 49th minute to push Argentina into the quarterfinals.

Thailand faced Azerbaijan in a back-to-back thriller that finished 7-7 at the end of regulation. Fineo led Azerbaijan with five goals on the night, including three in stoppage time to push his side into the next round of the tournament.

Abdelrahman Elashwal led Egypt with a hat-trick to edge Italy in the final match of the Round of 16. Regulation finished 3-3, as Egypt held a strong attacking Italian side that tallied 70 attempts on goal. The winners recorded just 27 attempts along with trailing in possession 43% to 57%.

Quarterfinals Preview
Paraguay take on Iran in the first Quarterfinal matchup on Saturday with kickoff set for 4:30 p.m. ET at Coliseo Bicentenario in Bucaramanga.
Russia face Spain in the second match of the day at 7:00 p.m. ET at Coliseo el Pueblo in Cali.
Sunday kicks off with Argentina taking on Egypt at 4:30 p.m. ET at Coliseo Ivan de Bedout in Medellín.
The Quarterfinal stage of the tournament will conclude on Sunday with Azerbaijan facing Ricardinho and Portugal at 7:00 p.m. ET at Coliseo el Pueblo in Cali.
