2016 FIFA Futsal World Cup Recap and Preview
The group stage of the 2016 FIFA Futsal World Cup comes to a close with the first round of the knockout stage taking place over the next three days. Russia take on Vietnam at 6:30 p.m. ET in Medellín, while the second match of the day features Colombia and Paraguay at 9:00 p.m. ET in Cali.
Futsal News: The 2016 FIFA Futsal World Cup Round of 16 prepares to kick off with more futsal action scheduled for Tuesday in Cali and Medellín.
Group Stage Recap
Portugal and Colombia advance out of Group A for the Round of 16 with the European side claiming the top spot. The hosts advance with two draws and a win to claim the second spot, while Portugal lead the group with a +13 goal differential.
Russia topped Group B with three wins and a +13 goal differential during group play. Thailand claim the second spot, recording two wins with their single loss coming against Russia. Eder Lima leads Russia with four goals and two assists.
Egypt advance on a wild card due to goal differential.
Italy, Paraguay and Vietnam move on to the first round of the knockout stages for Group C. Paraguay lost a single match versus group-leading Italy who remain undefeated. Italy are led by Rodolfo Fortino who has tallied three goals and one assist in the opening matches, while Paraguay’s Enmanuel Ayala has recorded four goals and three assists in group play.
Vietnam advance to the Round of 16 on goal differential.
Two-time reigning FIFA Futsal World Cup champions Brazil highlight Group D with three wins in group play and a dominating +24 goal differential. Ukraine places second in the group with two wins and their one loss coming against the South American country.
Argentin, Costa Rica and Kazakhstan advance out of Group E as Solomon Islands head home following the group stage. Cristian Borruto leads Argentina with three goals and one assist, while Kazakhstan are led by Douglas whose current tally is three goals and four assists.
Costa Rica advance on goal differential to the knockout stage.
2016 UEFA Futsal Euro champions Spain lead the way out of Group F along with Azerbaijan who claimed the second spot over Iran. Spain recorded three wins during the group stage, while Azerbaijan went 1-1-1 with a goal differential of +3 to outlast Iran who were -2.
Iran ultimately advanced to the Round of 16 on goal differential.
Round of 16 – Day 11 Preview
Russia face Vietnam in the first Round of 16 matchup on Tuesday with kickoff set for 6:30 p.m. ET at Coliseo Ivan de Bedout in Medellín.
The second match will feature Colombia and Paraguay at 9:00 p.m. ET at Coliseo el Pueblo in Cali.
All matches will air live on Fox Soccer Go/2G0.
