The future is shaped by the present and it has never been more appropriate nor more important to pay attention to the next generation of women. While this might sound obvious and imminently practical, this is a theme song that has been voiced for decades — well before the U.S. Women’s National Team won the FIFA World Cup in 1999. While promoting women in sports is a passion heralded by Brandi Chastain, Mia Hamm, Kristine Lilly, Michelle Akers, Julie Foudy, Joy Fawcett, Cindy Parlow (the current president of U.S. Soccer), and others on that winning World Cup team, there are many who share the vision.
“Over the past 20 years playing soccer, both as a youth and eventually as a professional, I have been fortunate enough to travel the world. While the locations, cultures, and people change, there is still one common denominator … A lack of recognition for the women’s game,” said Shawna Gordon, founder of Football For Her who is committed to making a difference.
Gordon is a California native who starting playing soccer when she was 4 years old and played for Arsenal FC in Alta Loma, California before ending her youth days with OJSC Barcelona. Proudly playing for NWSL‘s Sky Blue as well as in Australia’s W-League, and Sweden’s first division she now spends her time raising awareness for the women’s game and helping players develop confidence on and off the pitch.
“It’s time for something to change!”
Shawna Gordon, Founder – FootballForHer.org
“Female sports are not properly represented and supported — from too small a percentage of female coaches to very little media coverage, and I believe the lack of support is a reason for youth female participation in sport to be at an all-time low,” said Gordon.
EMPOWERING FEMALES THROUGH FOOTBALL (SOCCER) TRAINING AND MENTORSHIP
Football For Her has a clear mission — to educate, motivate, and develop confidence in girls on and off the pitch; to help them reach their goals regardless of their economic standing. Gordon’s goal is to offer training and mentorship from professional female players and sport specialists to young girls — “regardless of where they live and what they look like.”
Football For Her’s Winter Virtual Summit is Monday, December 21st and Tuesday, December 22nd from 9 AM to Noon (PST) and brings together professionals from all over the world to come to cover offer an unforgettable experience. The summit is physical, educational, and interactive! From USWNT players to freestyle professionals, to health guru’s, and more!
